lose a step (1917)

Old Ty Cobb

You are getting old, Ty Raymond Cobb,
You are slowing up I know
For I heard a critic say that you
Have lost a step or so.

You are getting old, as all guys do
Ten years from now you will be through.

Jack Visock, “Bingles and Boners,” Buffalo Enquirer, June 1, 1917, p10

NOTE: This was one of several items, including at least one other poem, in 1917 that raised — and dismissed — the idea that Cobb was “losing a step.” The poem was not quite on target with its prediction; it would be 11 years, not ten, before Cobb was through.
